ā How do personal versus professional approaches to digital identity affect social media use?
ā How do digital identities converge in networked publics ā what are the impacts and benefits?
ā Can a digital wallet provide trust in networked publics?
Digital identity is a person’s footprint online including everything he/she posts and shares. In my opinion, digital identity can be separated into 2 sections: private and public. Private identity can be used for family contact, and public identity can be used in working careers.
A personal approach is that people connect with family, friends, or some groups that share topics they are interested in. A professional approach allows people to connect and collaborate with their colleagues in their work or study, or use social media like Linkedin for job searching. Indian government developed a digital id using biometric deduplication, and it allows people to open a bank account, get a mobile connection, and check in for a flight/hotel (Davos, 2019).
Digital wallets like Paypal and Apple Pay have several benefits. For example, during the covid-19, a digital wallet can reduce personal contact by tapping the machine with your cellphone. What’s more, with a piece of complete personal information attached to digital wallets, it’s easier to track down online crimes like blackmail, fraud, and scam.

What does it mean to network using social media? How are we motivated to participate in networked publics? What are the risks & rewards of public communications? 1 To network using social media means that we connect with our friends, families, and colleagues on an online platform. Even strangers that share similar hobbies and values can be connected by using social media. 2 Network publics definitely help people that are too shy to talk in real life. It provides a real-time, but not face-to-face communication environment. For example, I joined a Facebook car club a few years ago, I met people that shared the same hobbies as me. We discuss cars in the group and eventually, we had some offline events. 3 The risk in online environment is that it’s a open environment that everyone is able to talk. It’s easy to get fraud and personal information explode on the internet while the other person sitting in front of a computer from the other side of world. On the other hand, public communication provides a great path to learn some new knowledge. The information is easier to be reached than before, and most of the time it’s free.
